It's Time to Man Up

The season is in full swing for junior high, high school and college wrestling. We are also rolling in to the Christmas holiday period. I view this as the most difficult part of a season. This is a time when self discipline, self control and sacrifice will play a big role in the success of your season. There will be temptation all around that may be counter productive to your training and the focus you need to succeed at the end of the season. Lots of food, idle time and perhaps the lack of consistent direction from a coach can lead to a very rapid decline in your progress.

A wrestler with a champion's mind set will use this period to distance him or herself from the opposition. This would be my recommendation. 1) Return from the break in better shape then you were in before the break. 2) Manage your weight as if you will have to step on a scale within the next day. Reconfirm your commitment to your goals every day during the break.

Have a great Christmas break.

First competition

We are a little more than a week away from our first competition. We will compete in a tri-meet against Bloomsburg and Millersville University. Both will be very challenging duels. However, our guys have been training hard and we are looking forward to the competition. You can learn about all of our wrestlers and follow our program at the following link.

How are you guys doing? What have you been doing to get ready for your season? My hope is that you have set some goals for yourself and that you are ready to fully commit to those goals. By the way, I just posted an article on commitment. You might want to check it out.

My YouTube Channel

All wrestlers should study and work on skills such as stance, motion, penetration, double leg tackle, single leg tackles, and other fundamentals. For this reason, I went ahead and posted a number of videos on youtube to help and share proper technique and form needed for these basic wrestling skills.

These instructional videos are excerpts from my video series which have been used by wrestlers and coaches for over 20 years. Just follow the YouTube link on this website. Enjoy, comment, and feel free to ask questions!

Mastering the Basics (Blog Intro)

The high school wrestling season is right around the corner.

Although there are many wrestlers at all levels who are heavily involved in wrestling during the off season, wrestling at the high school level has the largest involvement of wrestlers, coaches and fans in the US. High school wrestling is also the point at which wrestlers begin to figure out how good they are. There are numerous opportunities to compare themselves to others at their level. It is also the time when the serious competitors begin to separate themselves from individuals who may be a little less serious.

Wrestling success depends a lot on ones self motivation. I have found that self motivation is a key ingredient to success in any endeavor. However, there are other critical factors as well. Coaching, access to quality training information, work out partners, quality equipment, adequate support from parents and the institution you may be attending are also important factors.

For kids, junior high and high school wrestlers, I will be discussing many wrestling topics that I think might help them improve their wrestling. I want to offer what I believe is a very important theme for this blog. It is a theme that would be helpful to wrestlers at any level. However, I want to focus especially on kid, junior high and high school wrestlers. It is important that this group understand the importance of MASTERING THE BASICS.... (continued...)
