IT HURTS TO WIN

IT HURTS TO WIN

Winning means a lot more when you achieve at a high level. However, no matter what level you may be competing at, you know when you have been in a real tough battle. Winning the battles that really test us are the ones that we tend to feel the best about. You know that those battles could have gone either way, and that you had to dig deep to pull out the win.

There are ways that you can be better prepared to win against the toughest opponents you will face. One way is by understanding a fairly simple concept. That concept is that IT HURTS TO WIN. Winning tough matches will test every fiber of your being. It will test your skill level, focus, your conditioning and your mental toughness. If an opponent can exploit a weakness in anyone of these areas, it will increase his chance for success.

You must anticipate and expect to hurt during a tough match. It should not be a surprise. If you expect the tough matches to take you out of your comfort zone, you will be better able to deal with everything an opponent might throw at you. It is all about staying in the fight and fighting as hard as you can for as long as you have to. It is also about knowing that most opponents you will face have never heard this concept.... The Elusive Wrestling Scholarship

The Elusive Wrestling Scholarship

A scholarship offer can be one of the most exciting opportunities an athlete can receive for the hard work and success achieved in any sport. The offer says something about your talent, dedication and hard work. A college scholarship can also help solve the problem of how part or all of your college education will be paid for.

Make no mistake about it. Wrestling scholarships are hard to come by. Generally, you have to be one of the best high school wrestlers in the country to receive an offer. You are competing against many other great prospects. In reality, there are not that many scholarships available. There are roughly 60,000 high school wrestlers graduating from high school each year. If I had to guess, I would say that there were less than 80 full wrestling scholarships that become available each year at the division one level.

Blue chip prospect who have shown that they have the potential to be one of the top college wrestlers in the country, are the ones who do not have to work as hard to receive good scholarship offers. However, there are other areas that are given very strong consideration. Your academic status counts for a lot. College coaches are always looking for the best possible student they can find. Academic eligibility issues can be a serious problem. This can cause a lot of stress for a program and a college coach. Coaches generally try to steer clear of students who might be a major academic risk.... (continued...)

It's a new season

It’s a new season

It’s a new season. Most programs are well on the way. This is my first blog since last May. I am going to pick up where I left off.  I had mentioned in my last blog that I would speak about the best way that one might position himself/herself to get a college scholarship. I will speak about that in my next blog.

However, I would encourage you to look back over some the post from last season. I am sure that some of the post might remind you of some of the things you could do to help you achieve your wrestling goals.

The time to start thing about wrestling camp is also here. We have posted our new dates and prices. However, if you sign up before January 1st 2011, you will be able to attend camp at last year’s camp price.

I wish you well and I hope to be in touch throughout your season.

PICKING THE RIGHT COLLEGE

PICKING THE RIGHT COLLEGE

Picking the right college is not as easy as you might think. It is a decision that will affect you for the rest of your life. There is a lot to be considered and you need to spend quality time investigating which college might be your best match.

First and foremost, it is important to understand that wrestling in college is serious business. College coaches generally have a great passion for the sport and there is more pressure for them to win than what you might find in high school. So, if you plan to wrestle in college, it is extremely important to find a college that can best meet your needs on and off the mat.

Obviously, cost will come into play. Once you have identified schools that you might be interested in, make sure you have a good handle on how you will pay for your education. I have met so many prospects that do not know how they will pay for college. Most of the time, the problem is with a prospect’s assumption about how financial aid works. It is not as easy to receive financial aid as you might think. It is important to understand exactly what a financial aid package consist of, otherwise you might end up in a situation where you are paying off loans for the rest of your life. Even worst, you may end up in a situation where you cannot afford to pay your college tuition. Do not assume anything about how much aid you might receive. Investigate and make sure you get your offer in writing.... (continued...)

What do college coaches look for?

What do most college coaches look for?

I was at a state tournament this year. I was there to watch wrestlers I had already recruited and to identify new talent. There is no better way to figure out how good a prospect is than actually watching him compete at high level competition. A coach has an opportunity to see wrestlers compete in multiple matches and also learn about every aspect of what makes a wrestler tick.

At the state tournament I mentioned above, I saw a wrestler that I was recruiting throw his head gear in disgust after losing a match. That really caught my eye. My point here is that a wrestler’s character is very high on the list for most college coaches. College coaches do not want to put up with an athlete who will damage his program or the sport of wrestling. Most of us know that one bad apple can bring down an entire program.

College coaches also try to recruit wrestlers who are not a major academic risk. It does us no good to bring in an athlete who is not willing to work hard in the classroom. The NCAA has imposed a new set of rules regarding APR or a sport’s ACADEMIC PRGRESS RATE. The graduation rate of every sport is tracked for all sports that compete at the NCAA level. If an institution has a low graduation rate, an individual sport as well as an entire institution can be penalized. All college coaches are looking for prospects that are able to perform in the classroom as well as on the mat.... (continued...)
