IT HURTS TO WIN

IT HURTS TO WIN

Winning means a lot more when you achieve at a high level. However, no matter what level you may be competing at, you know when you have been in a real tough battle. Winning the battles that really test us are the ones that we tend to feel the best about. You know that those battles could have gone either way, and that you had to dig deep to pull out the win.

There are ways that you can be better prepared to win against the toughest opponents you will face. One way is by understanding a fairly simple concept. That concept is that IT HURTS TO WIN. Winning tough matches will test every fiber of your being. It will test your skill level, focus, your conditioning and your mental toughness. If an opponent can exploit a weakness in anyone of these areas, it will increase his chance for success.

You must anticipate and expect to hurt during a tough match. It should not be a surprise. If you expect the tough matches to take you out of your comfort zone, you will be better able to deal with everything an opponent might throw at you. It is all about staying in the fight and fighting as hard as you can for as long as you have to. It is also about knowing that most opponents you will face have never heard this concept.... Make no mistake about it. Wrestling scholarships are hard to come by. Generally, you have to be one of the best high school wrestlers in the country to receive an offer. You are competing against many other great prospects. In reality, there are not that many scholarships available. There are roughly 60,000 high school wrestlers graduating from high school each year. If I had to guess, I would say that there were less than 80 full wrestling scholarships that become available each year at the division one level.

Blue chip prospect who have shown that they have the potential to be one of the top college wrestlers in the country, are the ones who do not have to work as hard to receive good scholarship offers. However, there are other areas that are given very strong consideration. Your academic status counts for a lot. College coaches are always looking for the best possible student they can find. Academic eligibility issues can be a serious problem. This can cause a lot of stress for a program and a college coach. Coaches generally try to steer clear of students who might be a major academic risk.... (continued...)
